Ask how it ships and how it flattens

Fabric mats ship rolled, and cheap material keeps the curl forever. The relax-flat behaviour is a material spec — get it stated.

Leather is different: it must ship flat in rigid packaging, because hide remembers a roll the way it remembers a pen stroke.

Check the edge before the print

Every dead mouse pad died at its raw cut edge — the seam peels, frays and curls. A stitched hem seals it for the life of the mat.

It is the single most visible quality signal in the category. Look there first on any sample.

Insist on sublimation for fabric

Surface-printed mats grow a bald patch under the mouse hand within months. Dye-sublimation puts the ink inside the fibres, where mousing cannot reach it.

The test is historical: ask to see a competitor’s mat after a year. The bald patch tells you where the ink was.

Match the material to the desk’s life

Fabric for the all-round working desk. Leather for the executive surface — knowing it records pens and dislikes hot mugs. Felt for quiet floors and warm photographs, with a lint roller in the drawer.

There is no best material; there is the right one for how the desk is actually used, and a supplier who asks.

Hold the file

Onboarding kits and seasonal counter mats live on reorders. If artwork, die-lines, sizes and base specs are held on file, every reorder is a headcount in an email and every cohort’s desk matches.

It costs nothing to have and it is the difference between a programme and a series of projects.
